Uploading vs Downloading: Understanding Asymmetric Internet Speeds
The second number on your plan is the one that will frustrate you, and it is usually a tenth of the first.
Almost every conversation about internet speed is about download. Yet the moment something actually goes wrong — a video call freezing, a backup that never finishes, a file that will not send — the culprit is usually upload.
The short answer
Most consumer connections are asymmetric: they give you far more download than upload, often ten to twenty times more. Fibre is usually symmetric; cable and 5G rarely are.
A plan advertised as '500 Mbps' may upload at 25 Mbps — that is 62.5 MB/s down and 3.13 MB/s up.
Why the imbalance exists
It is partly historical and partly a deliberate allocation of finite capacity.
Cable systems allocate frequency ranges to each direction, and the split was decided when consumer internet was almost entirely consumption: web pages, then video. Downstream got the lion's share because that is where demand was. Rebalancing it means re-engineering the network.
DSL faced the same trade-off, which is what the A in ADSL stands for: asymmetric. 5G shares spectrum between many users and prioritises downstream for the same reason.
Fibre has no such constraint. A fibre strand carries far more capacity than any household uses, so providers can offer symmetric plans without giving anything up.

Two or three simultaneous video calls in a family working from home already consume 10-15 Mbps, which is a substantial share of a typical cable upload — and calls degrade badly the moment the channel saturates.

The same file that takes a minute on symmetric fibre takes over four hours on an ADSL line. No download figure compensates for that.
Managing a slow upload
- Schedule backups overnight. Most backup tools support a schedule or a bandwidth cap.
- Cap your backup client's upload to roughly 70% of your available upload — this leaves headroom for acknowledgements and keeps browsing responsive.
- Enable QoS or Smart Queue on the router if available. It prioritises interactive traffic over bulk uploads and is dramatically effective.
- Send links, not files. Upload once to cloud storage and share a link instead of attaching to email.
- Use Ethernet for calls. Wi-Fi upload is often worse than download because devices transmit at lower power.
When comparing plans
Two plans, same price, same headline:
- Cable: 1000 Mbps down / 35 Mbps up — 125 MB/s down, 4.4 MB/s up.
- Fibre: 500 Mbps down / 500 Mbps up — 62.5 MB/s down, 62.5 MB/s up.
The cable plan downloads twice as fast and uploads fourteen times slower. For streaming and gaming, take the cable plan. For anyone who works from home, sends files, or backs up a machine, the fibre plan is not close.
