What Internet Speed Do You Actually Need? A Practical Guide
Most households are sold far more speed than they can use. Here is what each activity actually costs, in both units.
Internet plans are sold the way cars are sold on top speed: the number is real, but almost nobody uses it. Here is what your household actually consumes, and the point at which paying for more stops changing anything you can perceive.
The short answer
For most households, 100 Mbps (12.5 MB/s) is comfortable, 200-300 Mbps is generous, and above 500 Mbps the benefit is limited to large downloads rather than everyday use.
The reason is that streaming — the activity people worry about most — is remarkably cheap. It is downloads, not video, that consume real bandwidth.

Two things stand out. First, actually playing an online game barely uses any bandwidth — it needs low latency, not high throughput, which is a distinction we cover in internet speed terminology. Second, a 4K stream at 25 Mbps consumes only 3.1 MB/s, which a 100 Mbps connection handles four times over.
Adding it up for a real household
A busy evening in a family of four might look like this:
- One 4K stream in the living room — 25 Mbps
- One 1080p stream in a bedroom — 8 Mbps
- A video call for work — 5 Mbps
- Someone gaming online — 6 Mbps
- Phones and smart devices in the background — 5 Mbps
Total: about 49 Mbps, or 6.1 MB/s — comfortably inside a 100 Mbps plan with room to spare.
This is why upgrading from 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps so often feels like nothing changed. Your streams were never the constraint.
Where more speed genuinely helps
There is one activity that will absorb every megabit you can give it, and that is large file transfers.

If you install large games regularly, work with video files, or back up a machine to the cloud, the jump from 100 to 500 Mbps is very noticeable. If your heaviest use is Netflix, it is not.
Do not overlook upload
Download gets the headline number, but upload is what fails first on cable and DSL connections, which are often heavily asymmetric — a 500/20 Mbps plan is common.
Upload matters for video calls, cloud backup, sending large files to clients, and game streaming. A 20 Mbps upload is only 2.5 MB/s, so a 4 GB video file takes about 27 minutes to send. Fibre connections are usually symmetric and do not have this problem — see upload vs download speed.
A simple sizing rule
- Add up the simultaneous streams your household runs at peak — 25 Mbps per 4K, 8 per 1080p, 5 per video call.
- Double it, to leave headroom for background updates and bursts.
- If anyone downloads large games or video files, jump to the next tier up.
- Check the upload figure separately against your own uploading habits.
That process lands most households between 100 and 300 Mbps, which converts to 12.5-37.5 MB/s of real download speed.

Speed tiers above about 300 Mbps buy you faster downloads, not a better streaming experience. Before upgrading, work out whether your problem is throughput at all — a weak Wi-Fi signal or a saturated upload channel will not be fixed by a bigger download number, however impressive it looks on the bill.
