There are 8 megabits in one megabyte, so 8 Mbps of speed delivers 1 MB of data every second. To convert a connection speed, divide the Mbps figure by 8: a 24 Mbps line moves 3 MB per second.
Divide the speed in Mbps by 8. That is the whole conversion, because one byte is made of eight bits. For example, 400 Mbps ÷ 8 = 50 MB/s, and 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s.
Use MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8. Take the megabits-per-second number your provider advertises, divide it by eight, and the result is megabytes per second — the same unit your browser and game launcher display.
One Mbps equals 0.125 MB/s, which is one eighth of a megabyte every second. Multiply by the number of megabits to scale it: 50 Mbps is 6.25 MB/s and 800 Mbps is 100 MB/s.
Mbps measures bits arriving per second, while MB measures bytes of stored data. Since eight bits make one byte, a connection's Mbps rating translates to one eighth as many megabytes per second. 1000 Mbps becomes 125 MB/s.
Multiply the MB/s figure by 8. It is the exact reverse of the Mbps-to-MB/s conversion, so a download running at 12 MB/s is using 96 Mbps of your line, and 62.5 MB/s equals 500 Mbps.
One MB/s equals 8 Mbps. So if a transfer shows 5 MB/s it is consuming 40 Mbps, and if it shows 25 MB/s it is consuming 200 Mbps of available bandwidth.
Multiply the Mbps value by 0.125, which is the same as dividing by 8. For example, 480 × 0.125 = 60 MB/s. Use whichever operation you find easier — both give an identical result.
1200 Mbps equals 150 MB/s, which is very fast — a 1 GB file downloads in about 7 seconds. At that tier your Wi-Fi, your disk or the remote server will usually limit you before your connection does.
100 Mbps equals 12.5 MB/s. A 1 GB file takes roughly 80 seconds at that speed, and a 50 GB game takes about 67 minutes at the theoretical maximum.
500 Mbps equals 62.5 MB/s. In practice a game launcher on that plan usually reports 50-58 MB/s once protocol overhead and server limits are taken into account.
1 Gbps is 1000 Mbps, which equals 125 MB/s. Reaching that in practice requires a wired gigabit connection, since most Wi-Fi setups and many hard drives cannot sustain 125 MB/s.
Understanding the units
What the letters actually mean, and why one capital B matters.
A lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes, and one byte is eight bits. Mbps (megabits per second) is how connections are sold; MBps or MB/s (megabytes per second) is how file transfers are displayed. MBps is always the larger-sounding speed divided by eight.
Because a byte is defined as exactly eight bits, not ten. The factor comes from computer architecture, not from the decimal system, so it never changes regardless of provider, country or hardware.
No. Mbps is a speed — megabits moving per second. MB is a quantity — megabytes of stored data. They measure different things, and converting between the per-second versions requires dividing by 8.
1 Gbps equals 1000 Mbps. To reach MB/s, convert to megabits first and then divide by 8: 2 Gbps is 2000 Mbps, which is 250 MB/s.
Divide the Kbps figure by 8000. A 1000 Kbps connection is 1 Mbps, which is 0.125 MB/s. Kbps appears mostly on mobile throttled plans and older DSL lines.
Both are used. The SI standard says 1 GB = 1000 MB, and that is what network speeds and drive manufacturers use. Windows and Steam display 1024-based sizes but still label them GB, so a '50 GB' game there is really 53.7 decimal GB.
Download times
How long specific files take on specific connections.
About 2 seconds. 400 Mbps converts to 50 MB/s, and 100 MB ÷ 50 MB/s = 2 seconds. Allowing for real-world overhead, expect roughly 2.4 seconds.
About 90 seconds. 12 Mbps converts to 1.5 MB/s, and 135 MB ÷ 1.5 MB/s = 90 seconds, or one and a half minutes. In practice budget closer to 105 seconds.
About 8 seconds. A 3 Mbps connection delivers 0.375 MB/s, and 3 MB ÷ 0.375 MB/s = 8 seconds. Overhead on such a slow line typically pushes it to around 9-10 seconds.
About 80 seconds. 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s and 1 GB is 1000 MB, so 1000 ÷ 12.5 = 80 seconds. Expect around 94 seconds once overhead is included.
About 13 minutes 20 seconds in theory. 500 Mbps is 62.5 MB/s and 50 GB is 50,000 MB, giving 800 seconds. Because Steam reports binary sizes, a '50 GB' game is really 53.7 GB, so plan for 16-18 minutes.
Download time in seconds = file size in megabytes ÷ (connection speed in Mbps ÷ 8). Convert the speed to MB/s first, then divide the file size by it. Add 10-20% for real-world conditions.
Game launchers report binary gigabytes (1024 MB) but label them GB, so a listed 50 GB is 53.7 decimal GB of actual data. Steam and Epic also download separate patch data and temporary files during installation.
Every transfer loses some capacity to TCP/IP and TLS overhead, server-side rate limits, Wi-Fi interference and bandwidth shared with other devices. Losing 10-20% of the advertised speed is normal, which is why we show a realistic estimate alongside the theoretical one.
Steam, Epic Games & consoles
Why launchers show MB/s, and whether you can change it.
You cannot — Steam has no unit toggle and always reports download speed in MB/s, following the operating system's convention. To compare it with your ISP's Mbps figure, divide your plan speed by 8: a 500 Mbps plan should show roughly 62.5 MB/s in Steam.
The Epic Games Launcher already shows MB/s and offers no setting to switch it to Mbps. If your plan is advertised in Mbps, divide by 8 to get the MB/s figure the launcher should be reaching.
Consoles are inconsistent. PlayStation shows download progress in MB/s, while Xbox network tests report Mbps. If the two seem to disagree, the factor of eight is almost always the reason.
Real-world speed & privacy
Why your real speed differs — and what we do with your data.
First check the units — a 500 Mbps plan correctly downloads at about 62.5 MB/s, not 500 MB/s. If the converted figure still does not match, the usual causes are Wi-Fi loss, an overloaded source server, or other devices using bandwidth.
Speed tests measure the network link, which the industry rates in megabits. Browsers measure file progress, which is stored in bytes. Divide the speed-test number by 8 and the two will agree.
Around 12.5 MB/s (100 Mbps) comfortably handles 4K streaming and general household use. 25 MB/s (200 Mbps) suits frequent large game downloads, and 125 MB/s (1 Gbps) is more than most homes can currently use.
